Proof & Experimental Establishment, Balasore is situated on the coast of Bay of Bengal at Chandipur at a distance of 15 Km from Balasore city.This is the oldest establishment under DRDO. It was established by a Govt.order of 30^th May 1895.It had a panoramic growth particularly since it was brought under the aegis of DRDO in 1958 and today has reachecd a stage to compete in the international market in proof testing and offering range facilities to friendly foreign countries.PXE today is an ISO 9001 : 2000 Accredited organisation.
Special Feature Of Pxe Range
The PXE range has unique characteristics.The tidal water recedes to a distance of about 3 Km into the sea which provides a stretch of hard sand sea bed for various firing operations.The sea bed and water provide soft cushioning effect to the fired projectiles and make recovery easy which are required to examine their strength of design.During the low tide the sea bed becomes sufficiently hard to allow movement of loaded vehicle and even tanks during range operations.These are the ideal requirements of a proof range.

Ø      R&A trials for compilation of Range Tables
Ø      Establishment of propellant standards,their periodical check firing,and
      comparative propellant ballistics
Ø      Proof of armour plates,tank turrets,ICVs,proximity fuzes etc and also weapons
      and ammuntion produced by ordance factories/PUSs/trade firms
Ø      Ballistic parameters measurement
Ø      Periodical proof check of ammunition held in Army and Naval Depots

            Scientists, civilian and service personnel numbering more than thousand are engaged in the dynamic test & evaluation activities to meet the demand of Armed forces as well as development of New Armaments. The range is equipped with the latest state of the art range instrumentation facilities.

            PXE has played a pivotal role in the development and productions of MBT Arjun and its ammunitions,Pinaka rockets,FSAPDS ammunition composite armour,various gun propellants,rocket launchers and long range mortar.This establishment has also played a vital role during Kargil poeration by providing proved ammunition to the Army within the shortest possible time.
